In episodes three and four of CroneCast, we spent some time rummaging around in the concept of intuition. Is it innate or is it nurtured? We try to eschew binaries as much as possible on our show, so our conclusion is that intuition is both innate and nurtured. It exists, like so many other things, on a continuum.
As we move through life, the most important thing to learn about intuition is that it is often not a cognitive experience. It is of and from the body. That’s probably why we refer to intuition as “our gut,” though we can feel intuition anywhere in and on our bodies.
Think about it. How many times has someone you’ve met said or done something that made the bottom drop out of your stomach? You know the red flag moments we’re talking about. And, now, how many times has your brain justified or explained away that red flag because you so wanted that person to match who you wanted them to be? (We can see you nodding right now.)
Listening to one’s intuition takes time and repetition. In practice, this means recognizing that our bodies are experiencing something, then PAUSING to assess that information against what our other senses are telling us. In short, intuition requires a little space to do its thing. So, take a beat the next time your body tries to talk to you, because listening to one’s intuition evolves, over time, into wisdom. And wisdom is a crone’s superpower.
